pet paintings

I wanted to share some artwork I had done over the last couple of years.  These are paintings I never got to scan originally because they were given as gifts or commissioned.  I love getting to know people's pets and trying to capture their personalities in my drawings.  These were done using a combination of watercolor, gouache, and colored pencils.  When the gold paint catches the light it sparkles!

Renaissance Faire pt. 5!

Yesterday I attended the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire for my fifth year in a row.  I had a great time with Paul; together we watched a joust, a falconry demonstration, and enjoyed delicious food and drink.  It was disappointing there weren't many vegetarian meals, but I got by with sauteed mushrooms and a baked potato.  I also bought pickled garlic and spices from the garlic festival booth!  Huzzah!

What I am proud of this year are the new additions to my costume.  With my minimal sewing skills I managed to put together a gathered skirt, apron, and biggins hat.  Now that I've had success with making those, I would like to continue improving my sewing skills.  I used to cosplay a lot several years ago.  I'd like to get into that again!

To the left you can see the whole costume together, including the straw hat I bought from a vendor.  I know a parking lot isn't the most scenic place to take a picture, but we totally forgot to take any pictures inside!  In the future I would like to sew my own chemise, an extra skirt, and perhaps my own bodice if I can manage it.  I'd also like to buy a leather belt, pouch, and knife to complete the costume, but I'll have to spread out my purchases over the years to afford it.

By the way, the materials for the skirt, apron, and hat totaled under $40, and the patterns were found free online.  I'd recommend anyone try their hand at making their own costume as buying each piece at the faire would be way more expensive!

For more info, you can visit their website.  The last weekend to attend is May 19th, so there is still plenty of time to make it there!  The entertainment and great atmosphere are totally worth $25 a ticket, and if you sign up for their mailing list you will receive a coupon for future years.

Hogfather Intro

Hey!  Here's something Paul Flores and I worked on for Maija Burnett's Flash class.  We were assigned to pick a movie and animate a 20 second intro for it.  Hope you enjoy!

woods

I always draw the character with a minimal background.  I tried doing something more complicated this time.
I am starting to really like drawing trees. :)

Trees

I've been trying to do a lot more traditional stuff lately in an attempt to work in more pleasant environments.  When I'm on the computer I'm not very productive and use the same sort of methods to create pictures.  When I work with traditional media I feel it forces me to be more creative and really think about the lines I'm putting down on the paper.
Hopefully I will get better at it!  My film this year is going to be a mix of digital and traditional, using the brush pen and inks used to create these images.
