Descanso Gardens! (lots of photos)

This year my film takes place in a garden, so I decided to do some research! It was a lot of fun and I was inspired by the beautiful scenery and layout of the gardens. Descano Gardens is about 30 minutes away from Valencia and only $6, so I recommend going even just for fun.

My outfit kind of looks like a star trek uniform.

Descanso has multiple koi ponds. I wish I could have fed the koi! They were so friendly. Tempted to put one in my film.

I forget what these flowers were called.

There was a small waterfall there which flowed from a lake.

At the top of the waterfall. I might use this for my film. It's hard to tell, but I'm standing on some rocks just over where the waterfall drops. It was kind of scary!

Here is part of the lake. I've never seen a lake with so much wildlife in it. The shadowy fish were HUGE. There were also a ton of turtles which can kind of be made out on the left. I think the duck that was sitting there had cancer since it had a tumor on it's face. ):

I didn't have a lot of time on Monday so I didn't have a chance to do any drawings while I was there. Also, Descanso isn't as flowery as I thought it would be (though maybe it's just the wrong time of the year). Next time I would really like to sit down and do some watercolor work and sketches instead of taking so many pictures. I feel like my camera can't capture the true feeling of being there. I'm going to make a trip to the Huntington Library next week and do that. I'm excited!

Summer is almost over and I'm a little sad to see it go. I had a lot of fun times hanging out with Paul and good friends. I also had a lot of fun sleeping in every day.
In less than a week I am finally moving out on my own!! I'm excited and nervous, but this is something I've wanted for a while. I will be sharing the apartment with the lovely Hallie and Charlotte I have a feeling that it's going to be really awesome and that we'll be baking a lot of delicious treats!

Learning a new medium is hard, but fun! Acrylic ink is a lot like watercolor. I love how bright the colors are. During the school year I made a bunch of artist cards, but the colors were muddy and the cards got messed up from rubbing against each other. Now I'm armed with card protectors. :D

This is just one of my summer projects I'm working on. When I have more stuff ready, I'll post about the other projects. Summer is fun!

Here it is! I wanted to make something simple my first year, and I'm glad I did. This film took 3 seasons of x-files, a ton of music, and many sleepless nights to make.

I really enjoyed the open show, and if I didn't tell you personally, just know that you should be proud of what you've made. It was so exciting to see everyone's film after we had all been working so hard. Also, congrats to those who got into the producer's show!! Especially the first years. :D

This last Tuesday was the job fair. I was super excited about it, and spent a lot of my Spring Break time preparing and creating the pieces for my portfolio.

Unfortunately, I made a pretty dumb mistake in the way I presented my portfolio. I didn't think through all the possibilities of presenting my portfolio the way I did (on my computer), and I believe I suffered because of it. At least next year I will not make the same mistake!

Anyway, portfolio day turned out to be a big fail because of it. I either suffered because of the technical mistake I made or because my portfolio was just not good in the first place. Either is very likely. haha I am also aware that it is rare for freshmen to get anything from the job fair anyway.

I was wondering if anyone could take a look at my portfolio and give me any feedback on it. It wasn't aimed at any particular job, but just some things I could throw together that I'd done over the year. The animations at the end were compiled together into one reel.

I hope that I will not make the same mistakes and I'll be better prepared next time around! Please help me out.

I got really really super sick recently and just laid in bed for like 2 days straight trying to recover. It's been a really long time since I've been that sick. I don't even remember. )=

Anyway, because sleeping on some chairs at school sucks, I've decided to work strictly at home after my classes. I caved in and finally bought a monitor because my laptop is too small to really work on. Here's my setup. I feel like a hacker.

I've got my new monitor on the far right, then my alienware, armed with flash and photoshop cs5, my intuos4 down below, and then my old laptop to use for internets to free up memory on my little laptop. My bed is literally right next to the desk, so I can just roll over after working all night and sleep. Much better than sleeping on the floor or on chairs!! The only problem is, I need an adapter to hook up the monitor! So, I still can't work on my film tonight. )=

I'm really nervous, but there's still a tiny glimmer of hope left in me. I've gotta finish the rough animation this weekend!!

Meltdown and school happenings

Yesterday I was invited by Tahnee to hang out at Meltdown Comics with other Calarts and Otis students. They had all taken a comic class by Jim Higgins, and were selling the mini comics they had made. It was awesome! I had never been to Meltdown before. I definitely want to go back soon! :D

Meltdown makes me SO SO HAPPY!

Anyway, since I hadn't made a comic to sell, I made these little artist cards! They're really fun to make. I'm definitely going to make more. Maybe I'll put them up on Etsy or something.

Film Backgrounds

I only have one background for my film (yessss). Right now I'm trying to find the colorscheme to work with. From top left going clockwise, pink background grey characters, greyscale, blue background with pink girl, and pink background with blue girl.

Even though the blue background makes more sense, I think the pink is cuter. What do you guys think? Does it seem too odd? For me it's really between the pink and the grey backgrounds. I think I might add a few trees in there too because it's kind of barren right now.

This is my last animation assignment for the semester. It was really laggy at calarts, and sometimes it feels like it drops frames. This is not how it's supposed to look. I'm not sure if it's After Effects issues or vimeo/internet. So, if it looks a little odd, that is why.

I have so much work I still have to do. Crunch time!!

There is actually quite a lot of work I need to post, life drawings, paintings, my sculpture, etc. I need to not be lazy and use the scanner at school or buy batteries for my camera. D:

I think they're from North Carolina though, so I have no idea who it could be. Thank you whoever you are! It makes me so happy to know that someone will be wearing my cuttlefish shirt out there. Every time I get an email saying that one sold, I squee with delight. It's awesome!!
Eventually I would like to print a bunch of the shirts through a cheaper company and sell them myself. Once I start doing more art for cuttlefish girl type things, maybe I can sell them at a convention or something. Until then, I'm going to have to stick with Zazzle.

Animation idea and leftover assignments

Posting now because I have an animation idea and I want to stick to it!! This idea makes number 3 film idea I've had this semester. I can't go back now or I probably will never finish my film. D:
Anyway, I'm not going to post anything about it until I finish the animatic. I don't want anyone to know what it's about yet so I can get their true reactions.
Also, does anyone know anything about getting access to the music department practice rooms? I need to compose the music for my film, and I need a place to do that.. Calarts is supposed to be interdisciplinary, so I should be able to have some access to the music department, right?

Today is the start of another crazy week. I've got a paper due, a bunch of difficult assignments, and also film stuff. I might end up sleeping in my cube at one point!

I had a lot of fun with this! There are still some things I wish I could change though. When I have time, I'm going to go back and correct my mistakes.
Animation is still my favorite class. I think I'll probably pursue animation in school. I like flash a lot, but cg still makes me want to cry. ;__;
Life drawing is still kind of fail. I did however, do some gestures that I liked last Thursday. I wish we had life drawing more than once a week, but really, I don't know where we'd find the time to do that. )=

Calarts is a lot of work. That's all I have to say for now.
It's nice, but I feel like I should be learning more. Like, I feel that I'm just being given a ton of work and I don't know how to do any of it. D:
Actually, it's mostly just character design and Story class where that's an issue.
I'm bad at character design. I don't understand how to do it. I tried looking online for help, but I couldn't find anything. The only thing I found was something on John K's blog where he says that if you don't have a talent for design, you never will!! And you can't learn it!! )=
In Story class, I feel really rushed. We had to write our stories, storyboard, and make an animatic in 3 weeks. It's way too fast for me. I don't even have the main character's design down yet. *wrath*

Otherwise, my classes are fun. Animation isn't too hard so far. CG modeling is frustrating. Digital Methods is fun. Color and Design is relaxing because it's super easy, though it is very time consuming. Critical studies courses kind of suck, but at least I won't have to take many more of those. Life Drawing is oddly one of my least favorite simply because it's at the end of the week when I'm feeling all stressed and defeated. I get so frustrated!!
Next summer I really need to work hard!! I think I'll try to take some classes at the guild or somewhere. I feel like I really need that extra instruction.

It's finally the end of the week at Calarts with nothing left to do except wait for classes. oh, what a crazy week it was.
Monday, I helped some friends move into the dorms. I think I covered that in my last post though.

Tuesday.. orientation. Calarts orientation lasts about 3 days, all day. at first it's exciting, but then it kind of gets tiring and boring. You get told the same stuff over and over. By the last meeting, I think only half of the BFA-1's showed up. Leo Hobaica gave us a talk on this day about NOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW. There was also much exploring and the pushing together of tables in the cafeteria.

Wednesday.. more orientation, but this time there was a specific one for film/video. Also, a pizza party for character animation!! We got to meet all our classmates and got free t-shirts.

Thursday.. class sign-up craziness. I seriously don't understand why they do it this way. I mean it's nice to talk to your future teachers, but the whole process is so long and confusing. All the first years were kind of freaking out. lol I think it was mostly confusing because they changed the way students sign up for critical studies. I hope next time is easier.

After sign-up, a bunch of us had lunch in the cafeteria and drew in our sketchbooks. It was amazing to see everyone's work. Everyone is super talented.
Calarts gives you so much food, guys. Paul and I have ended up splitting meals twice already. It's almost enough for a whole day of food for me.

Friday.. There was nothing mandatory this day, though there was an ice cream party and free pizza! (actually, there was lots of free food this week. YES!!)
After pizza, there was cake. PORTAL CAKE. It was actually good, even though all the chocolate makes it look kind of disgusting. XD

Then the party for the animation department at Jeff Rowe's house. I don't think I'll ever drink hard liquor again. I'm still recovering. Guhhhhhh.
I don't want to think about it or I'll feel sick. )=

Tomorrow I start classes and I'm super nervous/excited!! I hope I do well. eeeeeee.

Starting to get really nervous for calarts. In particular, I wish I was living on campus. It's a lot cheaper to stay at home. The gas required to drive there is a lot less than the room, but still. Being at the school seems like so much fun, and I'm kind of scared of driving home really late at night when I'm tired. (I'll probably just crash in my cube a lot.)

I've talked to some people, and they say living off campus is a good decision in many ways. I also know of several people that are also going to be living off campus, but it doesn't totally calm my nerves. Maybe over the summer I can get an apartment closer to the school if I have a good enough job, and then continue living there or in the dorms.. even if it does mean taking out a larger loan.

I hope I make lots of friends at calarts. I'm a scawwed cuttlefish.

So, I finally got around to trying out some animation! Ha! Usually I don't have enough time to really focus or I'm too tired because I've worked all day. This time I work later in the day so I spent some time learning a walk cycle. I think I'm starting to understand it. This is my first walk cycle that I've actually completed! Though, it has no arms. )=
I tried to have fun with it. I was just getting into the swing of things when I had to get ready for work! Grrrr..
By the time I get to Calarts, I want to be super comfortable with walk cycles and such so I can really start to experiment with them. I'm going to be taking the animation class at the guild, so hopefully I will improve a lot!! I'm sure I'll look back on this and be super embarrassed. Oh well..

It left me feeling so inspired, and fortunate that I am going to be a part of such an amazing school! I really cannot wait to make a film. This summer i'm going to get started on some ideas.

I deleted my old blog, so I thought I'd post my portfolio on here in case anyone is curious to see it later.

I worked on this portfolio for a whole year, though most of these pictures were made only a few weeks before I submitted it In December. I also included a sketchbook of strictly animal drawings from home, the zoo, and the pet store. I had never done life drawing before I started this portfolio, so it was a very difficult, frustrating, educational year!

Also, I hate most of these already. haha

This is my new blog for Calarts related adventures!! I am very excited and scared for the next four years.

I just found out a little while ago that I am going to be able to afford it, so i am very happy. Hopefully I can make the most of my time there.

To give some more info about myself.. My name is Elyse. I'm currently 20 years old, and am transferring from College of the Canyons after spending the last few years studying various art related subjects. I play the piano, and I like to drink tea and eat scones.. especially of the pumpkin variety. I love cuttlefish.
